I have listed 4 possible topics. I am open to other possible topics.

Topic #1: Use of solvents in a paper chromatography lab

Learning Objectives:
1. Unit #1: Review of Fundamental. To characterize matter as pure substances or mixture, one question to be answered is: Can the substance be separated by physical means.
2. Revew physical means of separation: chromatography
3. Initially separate black ink
4. Use additional ionic solutions and an unknown ionic solution mixture
5. Identify the solution components
6. Understand the distance traveled: Rf, distance component moves and distance solvent moves
7. Would the distance traveled vary if different solvents or substrates (paper) were used?
8. What effects the distance traveled?
9. Is the substance a mixture or a pure substance?

Green Chemistry Principles:

1. Can a more green solvent be used. Suggested solvent is HCl with butanol and ethanol?
2. Is the suggested solvent hazardous?
3. Can other biodegradable mixture be used to demonstrate separation?

Topic # 2: Dyes: Tie Dye Tshirts

The lab can be found a Flinn Scientific Inc. "Flinn Fax" Vol 93-4, 1993

Are the dyes used in the lab hazardous to the environment. Can any substitutions be made to make this lab more environmentally friendly?

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the nature of dyes: chemical reactions versus non-chemical reacting dyes (RIT, for example)
2. History of dyes and dye making: How are dyes made?
3. Connecting art with chemistry.
4. Any extensions on this topic?

Green Chemistry Principles:
1. Substitution of solvents or reactants for less hazardous ones
2. Minimize/eliminate any hazardous products (left over dyes and reactants)

Topic # 3: Chemical Kinetics: Use of Iodine Clocks or thiosulfates

Still being developed. Any lab you may suggest to illustrate chemical kinetics

Learning Objectives:
1. Understanding of rates of reaction
2. Things that effect the rate of reaction (Effect of concentration and temperature)
3. Reaction mechanisms
4. Catalysts

Green Chemistry Principles:
1. Substitution of reactants for less hazardous ones
2. Minimize/eliminate any hazardous products.

Topic #4: Synthesis /Analysis of Aspirin

1. Basic understanding of organic nomenclature and functional groups
2. Review basic Toxicology
3. How aspirin works in body
4. Calc percent yield
5. Analyze aspirin using colorimetry

At BG, we have 5 one-hour classes per day from 8am - 2pm. Each student has 7 courses, so the schedule rotates with 5 classes per day. For example on Day One: periods 1-5; Day 2 period 6-3; Day 3 per 4 - 1; etc.

The class I wish to use this in meets period 6, Chemistry 2 Honors. It may be optimum to schedule a visit when the class is the last period of the day, then students could "linger" and discuss more.

I would welcome you to our classroom. I think this is an excellent opportunity for high school students to interact with college students and gain exposures to different types of degree programs which their chemistry course prepares them for. One possibility would be for you to come in and brief them on the lab with some background to your work; then come the following day and watch/supervise as they perform the experiment.

Solvents are used in Paper Chromatography. Alternate solvents will be investigated.
